Sergeant Brice Elliott McQuiston
Brice Elliott McQuiston was born on 3 January 1892 at 20 Bagot Street, Belfast, the fourth of ten children of carpenter (later Clerk of Works at the City Surveyor's Department, Belfast) Brice Ringland McQuiston and his wife Margaret (nee Martin). By 1911 he was living with his parents and five surviving siblings at 90 Cromwell Road, Belfast, and working as a commercial traveller. The family later moved to "St Margarets", 106 North Parade, Belfast.
The date McQuiston enlisted in the North Irish Horse, and his regimental number, are currently unknown. It appears that he did not see overseas service during the war, remaining at the regiment's reserve depot for the duration of his service.
After the war McQuiston worked as a merchant. On 2 June 1920 he married Martha Henderson in the Antrim Church of Ireland Church. In 1930 he emigrated to Canada. He died in Toronto on 29 May 1959.
Brice McQuiston's brother Thomas Edward McQuiston also served during the war, in the North Irish Horse and as an officer in the Royal Irish Rifles.
McQuiston's son, John Henderson McQuiston (below), served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War 2. He was awarded a Distinguished Flying Cross and Bar.
